I get asked a lot about how to start an art collection and even where to buy art. I believe there is a bit of prep work that needs to happen before digging into this. The good news is, if you are still at home and have a tape measure you will be able to start measuring your spaces to create a bit of an art shopping list if you will. Grab your tape measure and measure the width of your wall. It helps to run the tape measure along the floor so the measurement isn’t wobbly. Then do the same for the ceiling (you might need some assistance or a laser measurer if you have a high ceiling). So for every two centimetres you have on your ruler/page equals one metre in real life. Or every centimetre is half a metre. Draw a square/rectangle that represents your wall and include any powerpoints, furniture, skirting boards, fire places etc that might get in the way of art. Mondays - ART | The right sized art for your walls - 3 | Size Your artwork should have enough room to “breath” on a wall and not fight with the shape of the space. For example a horizontal wall (wider than it is tall) needs a horizontal (landscape) artwork and vice versa, vertical walls (taller than it is wide) need vertical works. You have can a number of artworks together to give the appearance of a horizontal or vertical shape. The size of your artwork should not appear squished or dwarfed on a wall. I would recommend drawing the maximum and minimum size that would fit on your wall. Draw the shapes in then you will be able to measure (using 2cm on the page equals 1m in real life) the maximum and minimum sizes from your sketch. Write this down on the page so when you are looking for artworks you will now know a range of the sizes you are looking for. This can be especially useful when buying art online that you may not have seen in person. An example of this process was used when I commissioned an artwork from Erin Morgan. Bathroom - We spend a fair bit of time in a bathroom each day so consider the little moments of enjoyment you can create. For example do you have a wall or window ledge that you look at when you are sitting in a bath or brushing your teeth? Don’t forget to consider the type of art you hang in a bathroom should be fairly resistant to the steam and moisture it will be in contact with. Mondays - RENOVATE | 5 kitchen bench materials - 5 kitchen bench materials For those of you making selections for your kitchen you will know just how many products are out there and how tricky it can be to make these choices. The kitchen bench needs to be one of the strongest and functional material choices in your home, all while looking good! So with that in mind here are five materials that you can use in your kitchen (many of which can also be used as a splash back too). Engineered stone - engineered stone like Caesarstone, Quantum Quartz or Essastone are materials that are made from quartz aggregate mixed with pigments and polymers to create a solid surface that is extremely strong, mostly heat resistant and comes in a variety of colours that mimic natural stone. While this will mostly be a cheaper option that natural stone, engineered stone will be more expensive the most laminates. Natural stone - marbles, granite or limestone are all natural stone options for your bench. This is a very luxurious product that will come with a price tag to match but sometimes there is no substitute for the real deal. Consider how porous stone is and therefore it may stain when substances like oil or red wine spills. You will need to pick out your specific slab from the supplier to make sure you are getting exactly what you expect. You will mostly see natural stone in high end projects or your “forever home” due to the price tag and maintenance required. Solid timber - your option for solid timber bench tops will range from a Bunnings timber bench to a more custom, high end finish. Aesthetically timber will give texture and warmth to your space and will fit many different interior styles from coastal to Scandinavian. The bench will need to be sealed when it is installed (and resealed in the future). Being a natural product, timber benches can mark or be marked by placing hot saucepans or pans on it. The general wear and tear will add to the aesthetic over time but if you are not a fan of this kind of patina, perhaps consider more regular products like engineered stone or laminate. Tiles - After becoming big in the 1970s tiled benches are not seen as often at the moment (yet!). I do think there are ways to bring back this style of bench in a contemporary way. Make sure you consider what type of grout you are using. Epoxy grout is more hygienic than regular grout. See also porcelain panels below. Also note that depending on the tile format you choose there will be a lot of grout lines which will add to the overall look and cleaning process. Laminate - the term laminate relates to the process this material goes through to get to the finished product which is adhering (or laminating) the decorative finish to a composite timber product like MDF or chipboard. This produces a very versatile and mostly cost effective product to use in your kitchen. One of the main disadvantages of using laminate is that it can’t withstand the same level of heat as say natural stone. The technology for laminate is always improving and as such you can get a range of textures and colours, some that even have the look and feel of timber without the expense or upkeep. Mondays - ART | How much does framing cost? - FRAMING ART The thing I hear most about framing art is that it’s expensive. While this can be true I would highly recommend making sure the frame matches your investment into your work. There is no point spending $2000 on let’s say a photograph and then hang it unframed on a wall in the sun. You’d very quickly turn that investment into nothing and more importantly not be able to enjoy your purchase for years to come which will happen if it’s framed properly. Therefore, there are two ways you can approach this depending on the artwork you are buying: Custom art frames People who frame for a living are craftsman and once you find a good framer you can trust them to take care of your artwork. I met my local framer in Melbourne when I purchased photographs by Kara Rosenlund for a wedding present. I wanted to give the present framed and didn’t really know where to start. I emailed Kara to ask who she recommended and she put me in touch with a framer who she had worked with before. I can now send any works I buy straight to this framer and I know whatever they recommend won’t look daggy and outdated and is of the highest quality. If you are buying art online, many of these suppliers offer framing with your purchase. This can be a cost effective way of getting framing and your artwork all in one without having to source a framer, drop the work off and pick it up again. Frame artwork yourself I use off the shelf frames from Ikea, KMart, Target etc when I either have a standard size artwork (eg. works that are A1, A0 etc) in size OR it’s something cheap and cheerful that I don’t want to spend too much on. For example, I bought three small prints from the Art Markets in New Orleans because I saw the original of one of the works that was incredible (and already sold) and at $40 for the three of them I thought it was a nice reminder of the market itself, my trip and the original artwork. I do think I will have these works for a long time but I know they will be protected enough in an off the shelf frame. This is a great way to frame pictures cheaply and allows you to finish your interiors in a professional way. When buying ready made frames I would recommend buying frames that have glass in the front rather than plastic as they will last longer. If hanging weight is an issue then of course plastic or perspex might be your only option. If it’s a timber frame you are after I would spend a tiny bit more to buy one that is solid timber rather than timber look. A timber look frame is essentially a low quality frame that is wrapped in a material that has been printed with a timber print and over time will eventually peel off. “Your framing should match your art investment.” Keen to know more? My Mum had come to Melbourne to help me pack and we met my brother and his girlfriend as they were heading down to Tasmania. We stayed at the cutest little 150 year old weatherboard cottage. Looking around the street it’s in, it is clear that this house would have stood alone on the hill when it was built with incredible views out across farmland in the distance. Even though it’s had newer neighbours pop up, once you crouch under the grapevines and get into the yard it’s hard to even tell that there are others around. The interior styling in here is clearly an ode to years and years of collecting books, furniture and other trinkets. Best of both worlds right there. The Calile Hotel has been designed by architects Richards and Spence which was immediately evident when you walk into the hotel rooms. The detail that has been use for each material and the custom designed bathroom and wardrobe situation is incredible. Any design lover will be walking around the room, looking under tables and at details for hours before you even make it out to their pool for a G&T and zucchini chips by Hellenika. Fountain View I am looking at you. The Repose is definitely a one of a kind experience in Dubbo and is well worth the travel. The Repose provides authentic luxury for people travelling to the area. For an interior designer there is no shortage of beautiful materials and clever styling finished off with treasures that obviously have some history to them. I would have to say the bathroom flooring and the kitchen cabinetry would be my favourite aspects of this design. The extra touches of hospitality like fresh bread, milk, muesli and yoghurt makes this stay feel like a real treat. Mondays - HOME | 2021 Trend Forecast - 2021 trend forecast In broad terms a trend describes “a general direction in which something is developing or changing” but it needs to be understood a little better than this if we are to make informed selections in our interiors. Hands up who has seen “The Devil Wears Prada”? Remember the scene where Meryl Streep schools Anne Hathaway on her choice of blue sweater and how she ended up choosing that colour for her wardrobe? Yeah, me neither. In a nut shell trends are on a sliding scale starting with cutting edge designers before being interpreted and interpreted by designers, retailers and suppliers alike. So by the time that pineapple lamps finds its way to let’s say KMart or The Block it has been interpreted hundreds of times to find itself on the mass market. I am not saying I don’t buy anything from KMart but I am saying it pays to be mindful of trends and what we are buying. Do we like it because we have subconsciously seen it everywhere and think we need it or do we genuinely love it and want to have that piece with us forever regardless of how often we see it? Trends can go in cycles of about 30 years or more because we essentially need the generation that first saw the trend to get far enough past it that they get rediscovered by the generation after. For example, terracotta tiles. I think a few of you will have a memory of a great aunt’s or grandmother’s laundry or kitchen. There is a high chance that if you were old enough to properly experience it you would not install wall to wall terracotta tiles in your new home. For those of us with only vague or no memories of these products we might see terracotta tiles as a fresh, new material selection. I have had husband and wife clients that were one from each camp… the husband had a very strong reaction of no to terracotta tiles whereas the wife loved them and thought they were great. Mondays - HOME | Chest of drawers restoration - Chest of drawers restoration While aimlessly scrolling Facebook Marketplace at the start of this year for older timber furniture I came across a chest of drawers for $150 which I know is cheaper than a lot of mass produced furniture out there but it was also a beautiful piece of furniture. I didn’t end up buying it because I was worried about where I would store it and what I would do with it…rookie mistake I won’t be making again! So when I saw another chest of drawers come up on Gumtree for $50 I jumped on it thinking I could learn how to sand and refinish it as a present for a friends 30th. With the help of all my new pals at the hardware store this is what I found out… 1 | Sourcing furniture - older timber furniture from around my Grandparent’s era doesn’t seem to be in demand as I think it should be. There are so many listings on Facebook marketplace, Gumtree and EBay for beautiful timber tables, chest of drawers and chairs that with a little bit of love could be brought back to life. What I love about this kind of furniture is that it is made of mostly solid timber (with some parts of plywood) but it doesn’t have any of the plastic coated particleboard (MDF) that doesn’t last as long. There is also so much more character in pieces of furniture that might have decorative handles or turned leg details. I found it was useful to look for something that wasn’t too run down (ie. all the drawers ran smoothly and there were no missing pieces of timber) so I didn’t need to do repair work before I started. There is a lot of furniture out there with very yellow varnish that has beautiful timber underneath like this one I refinished. 2 | Tools + materials - time for a trip to the toy shop (A.K.A Bunnings)! I knew from some rough Youtube research that I needed to be able to strip the existing varnish of the chest of drawers, sand it back, putty any holes and re-varnish the timber to finish it off. All the people working at Bunnings are only too happy to share what they know and help you find what you are looking for so when I get asked “Can I help you?”, I now always say “absolutely!” so I don’t spend hours in the aisles guessing what I need. I am now the proud owner of a Ryobi orbital sander, putty, a range or sand papers, new brushes and varnish. 3 | Varnish stripping - instead of using the potent paint stripper that would probably strip everything else around you including your nose hairs I found a water based gel paint and varnish stripper which went on with the consistency of Clag glue and did the job on the existing varnish when I scraped it off. 4 | Sanding - I had to repeat the paint and varnish stripping process twice but once most of the varnish had been removed I got to use my new power tool. Starting with the courser sanding pads and moving my way onto the finer 5 | New varnish - the natural timber on the chest of drawers was a beautiful colour so I wanted a new varnish that would protect the timber without changing the colour too much. I found a one coat product from British Paints that was also water based (meaning the clean up time wouldn't be as messy). There is something very satisfying about creating something by hand and being able to give it to someone as a present and I hope it will be something that will be kept for a long time. This idea of taking the old and bringing into the new is quickly taking a hold with people who are looking to inject some history and nostalgia into their homes. So much so that there is a new style emerging called, the Grandmillenial style. Mondays - ART | Local artist Lauren Bamford - lauren bamford Years ago I came across a fabulous Melbourne photographer via a series called “Locals”. I’ve always been drawn to artworks that are a little bit quirky so seeing a beautiful arrangement of Australian natives in a beer can definitely ticked that box. I first contacted Lauren in 2014 and six years later I still love this series! Lauren Bamford is a local Melbourne artist who has worked on some incredible projects with a variety of brands and businesses. I also found out she did the photography for one of my favourite cafes Hardware Society in Melbourne, nice surprise! She also sells prints of some of her works. I caught up with her to hear a little more about what drives her as an artist. What got you into photography in the beginning? My love of photography was born in high school, after an art class found me in the darkroom. The old cliche of the magic of the printing process is what got me hooked, and was encouraged by my father who had always been a hobby photographer. We built a darkroom at home together when I was 14. What has been one of your favourite projects so far and why? I have shot a couple of cookbooks in Italy, for Emiko Davies and Hardie Grant. To be on location, immersed in the culture of another country, creating work and forging friendships, it is a dream come true. Do you have any other creative hobbies? At the moment, I don't! I am so busy with work and home life (I'm mum to a 2 year old), so all other hobbies have taken a back seat. However I dabble in sewing, and went through an obsessive pottery phase a number of years back. Where do you find your inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration from travel. It doesn't have to be across the seas, or to anywhere glamourous - I just like to experience new environments as much as possible. Another source is film (TV, Movies) - I try to create cinematic lighting in my photographs, so take endless mental notes from the silver screen. Are there any particular photographic projects you are dreaming of? At the moment I am dreaming about all of the photographic projects that were planned for 2020, that are now unfortunately on the back burner. There were a couple of documentary shoots abroad, for an American client, that I was really looking forward to. Any opportunity to wander a new city with a camera is very much welcomed. What is your most and least favourite part of being a photographer? My favourite part is the variety of work that comes my way - no week is the same. When shooting reportage etc, you get to see behind the scenes and have access to places, people and experiences that the average person doesn't get. My least favourite part is relying so much on good weather here in Melbourne! A lot of location shoots rely on sunshine, and when you are trying to coordinate peoples schedules, project deadlines and the weather - it creates a lot of pressure! Once you start looking at all the white paints, penny round tiles and tap ware finishes available it can dawn on you just how big this project you’ve taken on is. While I was studying architecture and interior design I wanted to install a timber wall into a project for my assessment. I remember thinking “how cool would that look” moments before realising creating something simple like a timber wall isn’t so simple at all. There were so many options out there for me; timber veneer, timber look tiles, laminate, solid timber and the list goes on. There are also the moments of doubt you go through when you have selected a bunch of your materials only to second guess your choices. I’ve had a friend who was recently specifying the materials for her new build and was feeling pretty confident about the choices… until she came to the tiles! Specifying materials is a circular process that you need to go through until you are happy that all your choices sit together cohesively. Do you start with your bench tops? Do your tiles need to be the same or different across all bathrooms? What tap ware finish will go with your material palette? Why I love it - I think some of these photographs in this series will be a reminder of what has happened this year. The medium - Photography Why it’s worth every cent (and then some) - while these works aren’t limited edition they do come with a certificate of authenticity and are signed and dated by the artist. Being A3 size I think this artwork is great value and would make great impact in your home. Why I love it - being born at the tail end of the 1980s and in the country I can’t say I have the same memories of milk bars on every corner but I do get that summer feeling from the colours and shapes in this work and remind me of leftover milk bars still out there. A nostalgic piece. Where to buy it - directly from Eamon’s online store Framing - a white frame would emphasise the crisp colours of this work. You could even go a little bolder and choose a coloured frame if that is your style. The medium - Digital print Why it’s worth every cent (and then some) - at the price point and being a limited edition (although a larger run) I really think this work is great value. The work is digitally signed and numbered. Why I love it - while this work is actually sold out I thought it was definitely worth including for the great value it offers. The artist takes inspiration from her surrounding National Park and is clearly someone who takes great pleasure in the little things in life and what is around her. It can be tricky to find paintings at this price point so I think this is an interesting digital alternative. Where to buy it - find similar works on the artist’s website Framing - another A3 print that will be easy for you to frame yourself. Why I love it - While it reminds me a little of “the one that got away artwork” (more on that another time) and I like how dainty the posie of flowers is against the very Australiana VB can. I think from 2012/13 both Julian Meagher and Lauren Bamford were the beginning of a number of artists using this flower contrasted with the beer cans. Why I love it - It reminds me of playing tennis at my grandparents farm using wooden tennis racquets exactly like this. As a little kid I was definitely also put into gingham prints not dissimilar to this. Another nostalgic piece. Mondays - RENOVATE | Let's talk about toilets - Let’s talk about toilets Toilets are probably one of the most functional objects in our house. Why then can it be so tricky to get them right? I think it’s because there is a high expectation of function while at the same time the need to keep it out of sight, out of mind. Things to keep in mind… 1 | KEEP A LID ON IT - when choosing a hidden cistern toilet unit, make sure the flush plate (button) is located above the lid when it is open. Why? It means you don’t have to touch the lid to be able to flush the toilet. Alternatively use a soft close lid which barely needs to be touched to close and keep the flush plate below the height of the open lid. It comes down to personal preference as to whether you like to keep the toilet lid closed or not. 2 | DOORS OPEN - when you open the door to your bathroom, what is the first thing you see? Where possible I arrange the bathroom so the toilet is obscured from direct view of any doorway. If I can’t achieve this I aim to have some sort of focal point to take the focus away from it like this tile. 3 | LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - if you get the chance with your spatial planning make sure the location of the toilet doesn’t make it uncomfortable for you or guests to use the bathroom. For example, does the toilet door open right out near main living areas like open plan kitchen and dining spaces? How can you obscure this and make it more private.
